 What are Autogenous Biologics? Minimize

       What are "Autogenous Biologics"?

Autogenous, or "PINPOINT" biologics, including bacterins and killed virus vaccines, offer a unique method of controlling infectious diseases. They allow producers and veterinarians to design a vaccination program using the most relevant and current strains of a disease, as well as to counteract new and emerging diseases for which there is not yet a commercially-available product.

These biologics offer custom solutions to producers' disease problems. Often, producers and veterinarians will turn to pinpoint products when the microorganism strain in the commercial vaccine does not match the strain in the herd, thus rendering the commercial vaccine ineffective. Through the use of pinpoint products, producers can be certain that they are targeting the precise disease strain that is threatening their animals - not just administering a general product.

PINPOINT products are prepared from cultures of inactivated microorganisms that have been harvested from the herd in question. Facilities such as Newport Laboratory's Molecular Biology Department specialize in characterizing bacteria and viruses submitted by producers. Once a strain has been correctly identified, the Newport staff, along with veterinarians, will work to develop and implement a specific disease control protocol, including the creation of PINPOINT products.
