Manager - Animal Research Farm

Job Function/Requirements: 
  • Manage the research farms owned and leased by Newport Laboratories
Essential Job Duties: 
  • Coordinate research and Quality Control animal acquisition and disposition as well as necessary rendering activities
  • Oversee building maintenance
  • Supervise animal caretakers
  • Arrange for weekend and holiday animal care
  • Coordinate feed deliveries
  • Supervise and arrange for all necessary repairs
  • Obtain bids for facilities repairs and renovations as needed
  • Order and install replacement parts as needed
  • Check the health of pigs daily and notify the project leader of any sick or dead animals
  • Clean and disinfect all animal rooms, hallways and office area daily
  • Disinfect all rooms at the termination of the studies and prior to repopulation
  • Wash dirty cloths and boots daily
  • Move animals as necessary to new rooms or buildings
  • Responsible for the final disposition of all research animals
  • Supervise all new animal arrivals and ensure that new animals are healthy
  • Ensure all ventilation and heating systems are working properly
  • Help researchers as necessary with animal handling
  • Properly code all receipts and invoices
  • Take water and electric meter readings monthly
  • Ensure the farms meet USDA inspection guidelines and be responsible for timely correction of any deficiencies
  • Ensure that the research farms owned or leased meet all environmental codes, animal welfare guidelines, etc.
  • Coordinate auditors and visitors in case of inspection or visit
Nature and Scope: 
  • The incumbent reports directly to the R&D Director (or acting Director)
  • The incumbent will independently make day-to-day decisions regarding research farm functioning and delegate duties as needed
  • The incumbent will coordinate all animal activities (arrival and departure) as well as their daily care and cleaning
  • The incumbent has technical responsibility to project teams and project goals
  • For accurate and honest documentation and reporting of research data and results as necessary
  • Work in a safe and productive manner within the guidelines established by policy
  • He/she acts within the guidelines established by Company policy and delegated authority
  • Must understand and work with regulatory guidelines established by USDA
  • Accountable for complying with the BIAH/Merial/Newport Business Code of Ethics to the highest standard
  • Accountable for complying with the Company Handbook and all policies set by the Company
  • The position requires a livestock farm background with 3-5 years of experience
  • The position requires a working knowledge of a research farm operation, production animal agriculture as well as animal care welfare and manure management
  • The incumbent must be knowledgeable in research animal restraint, housing and appropriate cleaning and disinfection procedures
  • The position requires good verbal and written skills, knowledge of the use and care of animals, and good manufacturing, laboratory and clinical practices
