Job Function/Requirements: 
  • The incumbent will assist in the coordination, execution and support of all functions of molecular diagnostic testing in the Molecular Diagnostic Lab
Essential Job Duties: 
  • Performs RNA and DNA extractions
  • Performs PCR testing
  • Performs gel electrophoresis
  • Performs Sanger DNA sequencing prep and analysis
  • Leads test development and improvement projects as directed by management
  • Writes and presents scientific information to colleagues and in technical publications
  • Identifies areas for improvement leading to Corrective and Preventive Actions
  • Accurately reports results in USALIMS
  • Promotes safety in all areas of work and follows Good Laboratory Practices
  • Assists with and helps coordinate other testing in the Molecular Diagnostic Lab as needed
  • Ability to follow, troubleshoot, modify and/or write SOPs in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Successfully and accurately communicates results to supervisor
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion, able to bend, twist and perform fine motor manipulations
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Other duties as assigned
Nature and Scope: 
  • The incumbent reports to and works closely with Molecular Diagnostic Lab Supervisor
  • Assists with coordination and performance of daily PCR testing
  • Interacts with lab personnel, as well as other departments within the company
  • Maintains laboratory and equipment in order to meet regulatory standards and to carry out molecular diagnostic procedures
  • Must understand and work with regulatory guidelines established by USDA
  • He/she acts within the guidelines established by Company policy and delegated authority
  • Accountable for complying with the BIAH/Newport Business Code of Ethics to the highest standard
  • Accountable for complying with the Company Handbook and all policies set by the Company
  • Requires a BS in microbiology, genomics, animal science or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to comprehend molecular diagnostic techniques and language and be familiar with the principles of veterinary biologics
  • Requires good verbal and written skills
  • Requires the use of good aseptic technique
  • Incumbent must be able to do mathematics and be competent in the metric system
