Randy Simonson, Ph.D.
Education:Dr. Simonson did his undergraduate studies at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, California. He earned a Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology in 1980 from the University of Minnesota.
Industry Experience: Dr. Simonson joined Salsbury Laboratories in 1980 as a scientist, where he worked as lead development scientist on the first USDA licensed subunit vaccine using rDNA technology for swine. He served as Manager of Biologic Development at Solvay from 1983 to 1985. Dr. Simonson was the team manager licensing the original swine biologics line for Oxford Veterinary Laboratories. In early 1985, Dr. Simonson became Vice President of Research and Development for Oxford Veterinary Laboratories. When Oxford was purchased in 1989 by The Upjohn Company, he became Director of Biologic Development Worldwide. The purchase of the Worthington, MN, facility by Bayer Animal Health in 1997 advanced his position to Director of Biologics Project Management Worldwide.
Role at Newport: Dr. Simonson brings experience to Newport Laboratories that goes beyond domestic biologic development. His positions with both Pharmacia & Upjohn and Bayer Animal Health has afforded him a worldwide network with both private and university discovery researchers plus commercial biologic developers looking to market their discoveries. Newport's customers will benefit from new technologies and product acquisitions. Newport management encourages and invites our customers to call Randy with ideas and questions. Dr. Simonson has an ongoing research interest in developing new adjuvants and immuno-potentiators for livestock applications, an exciting field that has been under-utilized in livestock production. Dr. Simonson is the author of several publications and patents regarding biologic research and product applications. He is an often-requested speaker and presenter at both domestic and international technical meetings. In 2001, he was awarded the DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD for scientific contributions to veterinary medicine from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
